WHAT WE DO
- Adoption Programme
- Education Sponsorship Programme
- Community Outreach Programme
The Children of the World (I) Trust carries out two main activities, namely Sponsorship programme and Adoption.
We began with sponsorship of 13 children of cancer afflicted persons. In February 1983, we spread our sponsorship programmes to two large communities at Tardeo in South Mumbai, following which we initiated another Community development programme on similar lines in six communities in Chembur in the Eastern Suburb of Mumbai.
On realising that just by providing material, aid for education was not enough to make a meaningful impact on the child's future, we introduced a number of new programmes like nutrition programme, balwadis, study classes, non-formal education for school dropouts.
Along with direct activities for children, we work towards building capacity of the parents to take care of their children by creating awareness among women on various issues and introducing income generating programmes. Health activities for children as well as parents were initiated. Day care centres were introduced for working women's children so that in no way they were tempted to stop putting their children in an institution due to their inability to take care of them during the day. However, while working in the communities, we realised that it was not possible to prevent cent percent institutionalisation of children. There were cases where it was just not possible for the parent to keep a child as in the case of an unwed mother or a terminally ill widow/widower without proper family support.
With this experience, we started our adoption programme.
After 15 years of intensive inputs in the two localities in Mumbai, we decided to shift our focus to Navi Mumbai. Now our sponsorship and community outreach programmes are concentrating in 10 localities in Navi Mumbai, including Quarry sites at Nerul. The new area selected is a cluster of slums in Rabale on the top the hill
